Alumni Speakers Series
By: Lauren Vu and Henry Nguyen
Purpose
The Alumni Speakers Series aims to inspire students to consider various career paths by providing resources for them to learn more about how their current involvement can translate into professional goals. The Asian American Student Union seeks to accomplish this by connecting undergraduate students with alumni in various career fields.

Background
During our time as student leaders, we have noticed a large majority of our incoming first year class as declaring their major in STEM fields without fully understanding what the major(s) entails. As Asian Americans, there is a significant societal expectation for us to succeed in science, medicine, or engineering. Thus, we believe that coordinating with past UF alumni in sharing their unique experiences and career paths will inspire students to consider other careers. Not only will these connections provide an opportunity for current students to consider a multitude of career paths, but will also allow students to meet and speak with alumni in person. In addition, many student leaders disengage in their student involvement by their junior and senior years, citing their hesitancies in being able to utilize these experiences in their future professional careers. We hope the alumni will provide an opportunity for students to see how past student leadership experiences have personally shaped and developed transferable and marketable skills that can be used in the work place.

Background
Growing up, we’ve turned to the internet to find video content made by people who looked like us. We grew up watching Asian American creators, such as Wong Fu Productions, Nigahiga, KevJumba, Freddie Wong, and the Jubilee Project, for the original content they made that displayed how Asian Americans aren’t just engineers, doctors, or lawyers. Being a leader within the Asian American Student Union community, we have personally seen a lot of different narratives and stories that we would love for others beyond the AASU community to view and connect with while providing members with the platform to share their stories. Through our large audience on our social media, we saw that a video project would be a wonderful and effective way to share our unique stories that resonate with our audience and social media following.
